‘Romance’ is the first series by Melbourne photographer Abbie Davis aka “Mrs White”, a collection she describes as being ‘inspired by Elvis and Pricilla’s wedding with just a hint of Liberace.’ If that sounds like a lot to take in, it’s because it is. Featuring meticulously arranged flowers by Ross Jenkins, Aka @bloom.boy, Davis’ large scale prints glitter in shocks of red, pink and blue.
Davis spent her childhood wandering the aisles of a video store owned by her family, where she developed an affinity with The Wizard of Oz, Rocky Horror, and anything else that seemed to gleam with answers to it all. Both references are evident in Romance, each one of a thousand delicate layers of pop culture.
The result is unapologetically camp and hauntingly beautiful. One can almost hear Liberace’s piano tinkling in a distant room. In ‘Romance’ Davis captures the sweet sadness of nostalgia, of a moment gone but forever etched in glitter.
